    OT Neumann U47

The Neumann U47 with VF14 tube is the only true Neumann U47. The U47 with Nuvistor
triode and Clones are not to be considered true U47.
Neumann has a small inventory of parts only for existing clients Who must send their mike to Germany and are not for sale for clones etc.

Telefunken stopped making The VF 14 tube for the German Army shortly after the war.

Hmmm... I think I had the U47 with the little Nuvistor - the same as the old Schoeps mics used.
    Sounded darn good to me.

Good grief ! You could have had it refitted with a VF 14 and sold it today for 10 grand.

Perhaps Neumann will produce new VF14 and reintroduce the legendary U47.

I heard it the other day on PBS Paul McCartney playing 12 string guitar with original early 60's U47 . The harmonics were
    out of this world.

Ouch! Don't tell me that. Both were stolen out of my storeroom in Paris in the early 90s. Along with o'scope, speakers, amps, etc.

I really did like those old tube mics. They needed 30-45 minutes to warm up and come fully into the sweet spot, but they were sweet.

The new M149 is just as sweet. Together with a Fairchild 670 compressor is even sweeter. You can tell by listening to a recording what mic there using. THE STUDIOS WITH THE MOST U47/48 are Abbey Road and Capitol Records. The French also have an extensive collection but don't know which studio.

The Neve Analogue console is probably one of the best in the world.

    A perfect match.

    Re: Neumann U47

    Why tube for vocals?

The U87 is just as good and was used extensively during the disco era. ABBA used it and many other artist. I used it also. But the tube especially the u47 as in this video with an original VF 14 M takes it a step higher.

With altec monitors you can tell the difference.

Test video with a rising starr from Germany. Log in for full view.

    Re: Neumann U47

I was fortunate to use a U-47 for a number of years in the early 80's, it is a classic. I think the U-87 is a bit more more versatile, and easier to maintain, but it's hard to beat that tube mic sound. Also got beautiful results from an AKG C-12, which has been reissued recently.

I had a pair of Altec tube mics back in the day. Very nice.
